5) LIFTS: all lifts were open! & they didn't check my ski pass every time we got on a lift. 3) POWDER: lots of snow the week prior to our arrival, 4) EQUIPMENT RENTAL: each day u can leave ur skis/board/poles/ski boots (not board boots) at the rental place. Hmmm, let's see, it is March, spring break, & guess what-it's going to be busy-EVERY YEAR, how can u not plan on having enough staff? 4) SLOPES: the signage on each run needs to be more clear they are hard to read & need more of them. ![]() After waiting around for 40 minutes for a supervisor, they opened another class BUT the student to instructor ratio was 22:1-example-Breckenridge has an 8-10 ratio! What a waste of money! Of course their excuse was that they just didn't have enough staffing. Upon arrival at ticket office, we were told "sorry, we're booked". 3) LESSONS: First, u can't book on line second, prior to arriving I called for ski lessons for 2 of our first time skiers-was told no reservations needed. 2) LOCKER-there are not enough lockers to keep your personal belongings (neither in the equipment rental area nor the bathrooms) so we had to go back down to our car to lock our stuff up. Night - A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. No one was outside inside staff said "there should be 3 people" so we ended up picking out our own poles out of an extremely unorganized mess of tangled poles. 43 Day - A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. The word small belies the depth and width of the powder, great tree skiing and a beginner’s area where fast skiers can’t intrude. Wolf Creek in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains was the Visitor’s Choice as the Best Small Ski Area in the United States. Also, we were told to just go out side and someone would give us poles. ©Scott DW Smith/Wolf Creek Ski Area Wolf Creek: Best Small Ski Area. They didn't take much time to fit us or explain the pros/cons of our equipment. Very welcoming.C-O-N-S: 1) RENTAL EQUIPMENT-we rented our equipment at the ski area which we never do-we usually rent our equipment in town when visiting different ski areas & it was somewhat unprofessional. We went to the office/lobby for a continental breakfast and enjoyed talking with the owners and other guests. We chose to get BBQ at the gas station.yes, the gas station (The Whistling Pig!) Very good! There was a bit of traffic noise, but nothing that kept us awake. We were given good recommendations for dining choices. The soak felt good after a long day of riding. There was a gas grill near the hot tubs for guest to use as well. So many places use those tattered "quilted" bed spreads, but not here! We enjoyed a soak in one of the (two) hot tubs among the aspen trees. The king bed was so very comfortable, and we really appreciated the down (alternative?) comforter. There are dozens of hanging floral baskets that delight the eye! The rooms are very clean and one can overlook the dated bathroom and such. This is an older property, but it's evident the owners take pride in running and maintaining an affordable and clean motel. ![]() Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 26. While it ranks in the lower half of all North American ski areas in terms of overall. When I made the reservation I was told all the rooms on the ground floor were taken (we like to stay on the ground floor when traveling via motorcycles), but we were pleasantly surprised when we were given a ground floor unit upon check-in. 26 39 Day - Mostly sunny, with a high near 39. Wolf Creek can be beginner-friendly, depending on the runs you take. The front desk staff (sorry, I don't remember her name!) was so nice and efficient. I am happy to report I was not disappointed. From the moment I called to make the reservation, I had a good feeling about the owners and our upcoming stay. We planned to ride the Silver Thread Scenic Byway, so this was a logical place to spend the night and hit the highway the following morning.
